Interview + Review: The Two and the Proud (Always a Marine, #8) by Heather Long

Kim Wakefield is an agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. She pulled author Heather Long in to answer some questions about a recent probe into the life and time of a number of Marines in recent months. The following is a partial transcript of the interview.

Wakefield: Ms. Long, thank you for coming in.

Long: You’re welcome, although I don’t recall being given a choice.

Wakefield: This is just a conversation, Ms. Long.

Long: Whatever you say.

Wakefield: According to our notes, you’ve written extensively about a veteran’s rehabilitation facility in Allen, Texas.

Long: Mike’s Place.

Wakefield: Yes. You detail some behavior on the part of the Marines in charge…

Long: Retired Marines. The primary staff including the director, Luke Dexter, are no longer on active duty. So not sure what this has to do with you…

Wakefield: Well some, but not all—Lieutenant Brody Essex, for example, is currently serving overseas…

Long: Yes, I did write some things about an active duty Marine…I’m still not following.

Wakefield: He’s not the only active duty Marine, you also outted…

Long: Hey, don’t ask, don’t tell doesn’t apply.

The door opens to admit Rowdy Easton, Probationary Agent. Let the record reflect, he joins the interview.

Long: Oh yay, more people.

Wakefield: Let’s focus on the matter at hand, you’ve been detailing the activities of retired and active duty Marines engaging in questionable activities via a service known as 1Night Stand.

Long: Okay. Do I need a lawyer?

Wakefield: Like I said, this is just a conversation. We’re actually trying to put together a profile on the woman who owns the service—Madame Evangeline.

Long: Good luck with that.

The record reflects that Long laughs at this point.

Easton: So are you refusing to answer the question?

Long: Mike’s Place provides an essential service for veterans and their families. I think educating people about Mike’s Place and saluting the heroes who served our country faithfully and continue to help at home is important.

Wakefield: So you are refusing to answer the question about Madame Evangeline?

Long: No, but I think the two of you know as much about her as I do—

At this point Wakefield ended the interview.

Final Notes: Ms. Long reported she has never met nor spoken directly to Madame Evangeline. Her stories on the Marines, both active and retired, are meant to inspire those at home and in the service. Monitoring of Ms. Long’s social media accounts will continue to determine any connection to Madame Evangeline and the 1Night Stand service.

Keep up with Heather and the Always a Marine series:

Roger Michael Easton IV, better known as Rowdy, flouted the family’s Naval tradition to enlist the Marines—not as an officer, but a ground-pounding grunt. He never expected to see as much combat or valor as he did in the field, but every engagement furthered his commitment to his brothers in arms. Now, with an offer to end his contract early on the table, Rowdy has to take a long look at the life he left behind, the life he’s built, and the future he longs to have.

Rowdy wants a woman who gets him.

Inactive Marine, Kim Wakefield, continues to serve her country as a Naval Criminal Investigator. She’s hard on the grunts and sailors because she is one of them—and they didn’t sign up for easy. Tired of the seedier side of military life—picking up drunk Marines, AWOL sailors, busting drug running operations, or worse, sending drug addicted servicemen to court marshal and treatment. She longs to have her faith in her fellow Marines restored.

Kim wants a man who knows what she needs.

Thrown together by chance on a 1Night Stand, these two jarheads have a combustible chemistry—but do they have what it takes?

This is another absolutely fabulous short erotic installment in the Always a Marine series. Each is a complete stand-alone story and I recommend you read them all. The author did a speculator job of developing characters with similar desires. Both are slightly cynical; likely due witnessing the worst of humanity. It is often difficult to gain enough insight into the character, but Ms. Long succeeded.
