Interview + Review + #Giveaway ~ Buried (Bone Secrets #3) by Kendra Elliot

Reporter Michael Brody is used to getting answers. The one that’s eluded him, though, for twenty long years is learning what happened to his brother Daniel the day his school bus disappeared. When the remains of the other children are discovered—and Daniel’s aren’t among them—a desperate Michael calls upon the sole survivor of the tragedy, Chris Jacobs, hoping he will finally break his silence.

Constant fear of being found by his kidnapper has driven Chris into hiding. The only lead Michael has is Chris’s sister, Jamie. Strong and impenetrable, she’s capable of burrowing deep into Michael’s heart. As they race to find Chris, Michael and Jamie somehow find each other among the decades of wreckage. But locating Chris may not be so easy. Now grown, his scars go far deeper than skin.

In Buried, the next thrilling Bone Secrets novel from bestselling author Kendra Elliot, a damaged hero digs deep into his terrifying past…and unearths a chance at love for the future.

This is the third installment in Kendra Elliot’s debut series,Bones Secrets. If you read the first installment, Hidden, then you have already met Michael Brody, the hero of this book. If you haven’t read Hidden you should – it is excellent. However, no worries if you haven’t read Hidden this installment is stand-alone…Michael's previous appearance in Hidden is only briefly mentioned in this book and it doesn't alter your overall experience.

The author’s writing style is extraordinary. Her superb ability to construct multiple seamless storylines overflowing with trepidation, foreboding and unease is remarkable. The dynamic tempo, realistic dialogue, and dramatic descriptions kept this reader engaged. The natural maturity between the storylines, characters, and the subtle romantic undertones of were perfectly executed.

Tell us about your book.

BURIED is a romantic suspense about an investigative reporter, Michael, whose brother vanished along with seven schoolmates when he was twelve. Two years later, one boy walks out of the woods, unable to tell police where the other children are or what happened.  Twenty years later, the remains of the children are found, except for Michael’s brother. Michael tries to question the survivor, hoping he’s remembered some facts, but the survivor’s sister, Jamie, is protective of her brother’s privacy. Of course, it’s instant attraction for Michael and Jamie.

Bone Secrets is a series of connected books. They don’t need to be read in order. Secondary characters in one book become the main characters in the next book. Except for CHILLED. I haven’t written about more of those characters. Yet.

How did you come up with the idea for Buried?

There was a story on the news about a bus driver who’d driven off with a busload of kids. It made me think. What if no one ever saw them again? What would happen to those kids? The news is great fodder for suspense novels. Take any story, and ask, “What if?”

Which scene or dialogue was the most difficult to write? Why?

I found the opening scenes very hard to write. Dealing with the death of children is always difficult. I don’t write details about what happens to the children; I focus on what goes on with the people who are left behind. That’s where the emotional punch of a story is. It’s not the description of the crimes; it’s the emotional and mental reactions of those touched by the events.

When the Sandy Hook shootings occurred, I hit a writing wall for two weeks. BURIED was finished, but it suddenly felt raw and too close to home. I was sick with worry about the public’s reaction to my book. But my early reviewers loved the book. They said I handled a delicate subject beautifully and were caught up in the romance of the struggling main characters. This isn’t a book about death; it’s about facing the past and moving forward.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

I just completed the fourth book in the series. Victoria Peres, who appears in HIDDEN and BURIED, got her own book. I was hesitant to write about her, because she scares me.  But my editor told me I should, and she was right. As usual. The book should be out toward the end of 2013. I recently committed to write to more Bone Secrets books, bringing the total to six. Hopefully, both will be out in 2014.

  2. As you know, I am a very big fan of yours and this series. You successfully create kick-ass heroines and heroes secure enough to accept them. Hidden and Chilled are great reads. If Buried, the next book in the Bone Secrets series,is half as good as Hidden and Chilled, it will be incredible. I strongly recommend the series.

I have just finished re-reading Hidden and Chilled to get into the mindset for Buried. They are just as good this time around!
