Spotlight + Giveaway ~ F.A.S.T. Balls (Balls to the Wall #5) by Tara Lain

F.A.S.T. — Firefighter Assist and Search Team

Firefighter and surfing champion, Jerry Wallender, looks like a hero to the world, but he can’t see it. He keeps falling for these intellectual guys who end up making him feel dumb and unneeded. On top of that, Mick Cassidy, super-gorgeous firefighter and total homophobe, makes Jerry’s life miserable with his slurs. Then one day Mick’s nice to Jerry and, at the Firefighter’s Ball, Jerry offers a helping hand and ends up with a hand-job. What the hell is going on?

Mick Cassidy is great with fighting fires and solving math problems but rotten with people. Raised by a gay-hating preacher, Mick’s carefully constructed world of gay bashing starts to crumble when he meets Jerry, the nicest, kindest man he’s ever known. Mick’s never wanted a woman and can’t stop thinking about sex with Jerry. In fact, he can’t stop doing it. Does that make him gay? And if he’s gay, what happens to his whole life? A hook-up between sweet Jerry and mean Mick might be total disaster — or the smartest idea Jerry ever had.

A Dynasty of Balls!

Hi everyone. I’m Tara Lain and I write the Beautiful Boys of Romance. Today, I’m celebrating the release of my new MM romance, F.A.S.T. Balls. F.A.S.T. Balls is the fifth book in the Balls to the Wall series (although each book stands alone.) The first book in the series is called Volley Balls and when I wrote it, I had no idea I was about to create a dynasty! A friend invited me to submit a novella for a beach-oriented anthology at Etopia Press. I was honored to be asked and leaped right on the assignment. The only requirement was that the book be set at the beach, and since I live at the beach, I decided to set it in my town, Laguna Beach California. So Volley Balls tells the tale of a gay art gallery owner in Laguna who get involved with two big, hunky Australian volleyball players. I submitted the book and thought that was that.

But there was this very memorable character in Volley Balls named Rodney. He’s the hero’s best friend. Small and very feisty, Rodney only has a couple scenes in Volley Balls, but he’s hard to forget. And suddenly he was demanding his own book. It turns out that Rodney is an artist and he has a black belt in karate. He’s a fire ball if there ever was one and, of course, Fire Balls was born. The title suggested that Rodney’s love would be a fireman. And once again, that could have been that. But my publisher came to me and said if I would write a third book in the series, they would publish the three books in print as a single-author anthology. I already had an idea yelling at me. A land development dispute in a neighboring city suggested an enemies-to-lovers story and that became Beach Balls. And Etopia printed the Balls to the Wall anthology!

BUT, now Balls stories have taken on a life of their own. Readers send me messages suggesting new Balls titles and other readers demand that favorite characters get their own books. So last December, Snow Balls leaped out of my head when a minor character from the first book stepped out and claimed the day. But certainly one of the most popular characters from any Balls book is Jerry Wallender from Fire Balls, the laid back surfer dude who becomes a firefighter. People have yelled and screamed for Jerry to have his HEA. F.A.S.T. Balls is that story. F.A.S.T. stands for Firefighter Assist and Search Team. Yes, this is a firefighter story through and through. Both my heroes are --well, heroes!

  4. I haven't read the series yet, but will be adding them to my list. Just from the blurb, I would say Mick, because he has had a longer road to becoming who he is at the end of the book.

  5. I have a bad memory for secondary characters so I think I'll have to reread Fire Balls to see where Mick shows up. But as I mentioned in one of my other posts on this tour, I love conflicted characters, so I think Mick will be very interesting :)
